Why Does My Knee Hurt When I Run?
Knee pain is one of the most common issues I see in runners, especially when mileage or training intensity suddenly increases. You may notice pain around the kneecap during a run, going downstairs, squatting, or after sitting for a long period of time. While this is often referred to as "runner's knee," the cause isn't always the knee itself.
When evaluating a runner with knee pain, we look at the whole system. Hip and leg strength, ankle mobility, single-leg control, running mechanics, and recent changes in training can all play a role. Sometimes the biggest clue is simply asking, "What changed?" Did you add mileage, hills, speed work, or another day of running?
You don't necessarily have to stop running, but repeatedly pushing through worsening pain isn't a great strategy either. The goal is to determine what your body can currently tolerate and gradually build your capacity from there. An Injury Rehab session can help identify what's contributing to the problem and create a plan around your specific running goals.
At Recover Health, we work with runners and active adults to address pain, improve strength and movement, and get back to the activities they enjoy.
