Training for the NYC Marathon? Here's Where Sports Massage Fits In
Marathon training puts a lot of stress on your body, especially as your weekly mileage and long runs increase. If you're training for the NYC Marathon, sports massage can be a useful part of your recovery routine, not just something you only think about when you're already hurting.
A good sports massage during marathon training is about addressing the areas that are working hard week after week. Calves, hamstrings, quads, glutes, and hips may all need attention as your training load increases. The goal isn't to "fix" everything in one session, but to help you manage muscle tension and stay comfortable as you continue training.
Many runners benefit from scheduling massage around their harder training days or long runs, while deeper work is better kept away from race day. Your massage should also change as your training changes. What you need during peak mileage may be very different from what you need during your taper.
Most importantly, massage is only one part of marathon recovery. Sleep, nutrition, hydration, strength training, appropriate mileage progression, and rest are still the foundation. Massage can complement those things, but not replace them.
If you're training for the NYC Marathon and want to build massage into your training and recovery routine, we can help you figure out what makes sense for you!
